L/16 Error message?

I'm trying to write a 99 5.7 .cal file to a 97 5.7 VCM. It unlocks the PCM, switches to high-speed, clears DTCs, but wont program it - it just cycles through the unlocking, switching, and clearing about 3 times before giving me the L/16 invalid response message. Any ideas?

If this is a vortec PCM which I assume it is based on your username the PCM's use different internal hardware. The 96-97 PCM's are somewhat of a hybrid OBDII PCM sharing parts from the OBDI PCM's. I haven't personally tried to write a 99 calibration to a 97 but based on working with the code for them they are very different in that respect. I would think if WinFlash let you write the 99 cal to your 97 it would not boot back up.

I haven't tried the Force Full Program option. Also, my mistake - it's a 98 definition file - still a problem? I also tried programming the original read back into the computer with the same problem.

I switched gears and am now trying to program a modified version of the original .cal file taken from my VCM. It does the same thing - unlocking, switching, programming, and clearing three times before giving me the invalid response L/16 code. Any other ideas? Is my VCM screwed?
