P1345 code

After just getting this program i finally got the emission codes to stop causing the check engine light to come on. Now a code (P1345 camshaft position) has come on and I'm not sure what it means. I am an extreme novice at all of this but learning as I go. Can someone clue me in on what might cause this code so I can fix the problem or atleast give me a direction to look at.

Thanks

it means your dist is not installed correctly,,

put your engine on tdc for cyl #1 then install the dist so that the rotor points to the 8 on the housing of the dist,, you will see a 8 for 8 cyl and sometimes they have a 6 marked for v6 engines

The distributer can be installed correctly and still get this code. You need a scan tool to set the CMP retard to + or - 2°. This setting the crank and cam shaft correlation.
You loosen the dizzy holdown and "clock" the dizzy to get it into teh correct spec. Be sure to rev the engine over 1000 rpm after EACH adjustment to rest the scan tool.

i am not saying that you do or dont have your dizzy installed correctly, but I do know that your CMP retard is out of spec, hence the code.

I would say the distributer is installed correctly because i have driven the truck a few times and it seems to idle really well. Anyways, my scanner tool does not have the capabilities to set the retard, and im not sure exactly what you mean by the "dizzy" but I think your talking about the distributor hold down bolt. So if I'm getting this right just loosen that bolt and turn the distributor and the look at the scan tool to see if im closer the that + or - 2 degree spot?

Thanks for the feedback

Dizzy =distributer.

And yes, it sounds like you understand how to set the CMP retard.

tech 2 and other scan tools have the camshaft retard capabilitey. You will also prolly need to do a CASE relearn as you have installed a new engine.

Pauly,

What other scan tools have this capability? My buddy works for a caddy dealership so he said he can't help out a little and do the CASE relearn for me, but he isn't sure if he would have time to adjust the retard. Is there a less expensive scan tool that can do this function for me.

Thanks

Talking P1345 - Crankshaft Position (CKP) / Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation

I have replaced several distributors on these engines without using a Tech2 and never got any codes. It may take you a couple of attempts, but you can do it . . .

Here are specific instructions to install the distributor in an L31 Vortec engine:

1. Bring cylinder number one piston to Top Dead Center of compression stroke. (On the L31 there is a "v" cast right into the plastic timing cover right around the 2 o'clock position)
2. Remove Distrbutor cap
3. Make sure you have your distributor gasket in place
4. Align the indent hole on the drive gear (distibutor gear at bottom of shaft) with the paint mark on the distributor housing. (see below)

5. Align oil pump driveshaft with slot in distributor.
6. Align the flat side of the distributor (labeled "1" in the picture below) toward the front of engine.

7. Install the distributor and clamp but do not tighten clamp yet.
8. Once the distributor is fully seated on the intake manifold cover align the rotor contact with the number 8 pointer that is cast into distributor body. (see below) Make sure the center (middle) of the rotor contact is pointed directly at the peak of the triangle with the 8 stamped on it.

9. If the contact does not come within a couple degrees of the pointer then the gear mesh is off and the process needs to be repeated.
10. Tighten clamp once aligned (18 lb-ft)
11. Recheck the pointer alignment after tightening the distributor hold down clamp . . . The distributor can and will move during tightening of the clamp!! If it is off even a tiny bit you'll get the dreaded P1345 code.
12. Install cap (21 lb-in)
