He put in a different PCM I think, which means he needs to relearn the crank/cam correlation in the computer.
Your correct that you should not need to do a relearn for simply a pulling the dizzy though.
It's the same as any other engine,TDC #1 piston,then dizzy to #1 .

Oftentimes I find I need to bump the engine to allow the diz the drop in and mesh gears.

Alright well my buddy took it in today and put it on the Tech II. Its not looking good because he said it was reading like 16 degrees retard at like 2000 rpm's I think he said. The problem with this motor setup is I had to use the stock "dizzy" from the vortec motor to work with this motor. So everything is a really tight fit and you cannot turn the "dizzy" very far or really at all. I'm at a loss right now. Plus he said something that he didn't believe that a relearn could be done because it was not a relearnable sensor or something like that! It's just been a bad day all together.

Thanks

You cant retard or advance teh timing via clocking the dizzy, this can only set teh CMP retard which must be plus or minus 2°.

Timing can only be advanced or retarded via tuning of the timing advance tables in the PCM. I really dont see timing being -18 at 2000 rpm. The stock commanded spark advance at 2000rpm ranges from
27.0 @ 15kpa
28.0 20
29.0 25
30.0 30
32.0 35
34.0 40
34.0 45
33.0 50
32.0 55
31.0 60
29.0 65
27.0 70
25.0 75
23.0 80
21.5 85
19.0 90
17.5 95
16.0 100
15.0 105kpa on a stock Vortec 350 in 1997.

With a max imum spark reard due to knock of 4° at 2000 rpm, and a max of 13Tof reard due to torque management at 2000rpm. I dont trust the 16° of reard at 2000 rpm the Tech 2 reported.

I'm not sure what other scan tools that read out CMP retard.

I usually just clock the dizzy until the SES light goes out.

I have never seen the dizzy install procedure listed by SJDanna. I will have to try this. If this works, you wont even have to mark the dizzy position.

I have limited room to clock my dizzy with my marine intake. But I can clock it either way a few degrees.

Good luck

if you get them one tooth off they run like azz. if it has good power its probably in right as i remember a tooth is 27 degrees thats a 4.3 though.i have seen them almost that far off with no ses. got about 35 vortecs at work (Fleet) have also seen those composite dizzys so worn out the rotor was hitting the cap and clicking like crazy but still ran good.
even with dealer parts i have had to hog the hold down hole out on some
to make it work. these were 100,000+mile motors i chalked it up to a worn timing chain.
a carbide burr making the hold down slot longer is an option.

They were pics of the paint mark on the dist body near the gear and a top view of the rotor orientation.

They are described in the post by SJDanna.
