1998 5.7 Vortec / New Guy

Hello,

I just came across this forum this evening. I have a couple of questions about the Jet DST tuner package if someone can offer some advice or first hand knowledge.

I'm using a 1998 5.7 Vortec to install into a 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 (old school stuff). The combination is this: Manual 5 speed, manual speedometer. 5.7 initally from a 98 Yukon with auto trans 4*4.

I have all sensors installed and in place except for the following. No rear 02 sensors, no catlytic converters, no fuel tank pressure, no EGR (block-off plate, or EGR plumbing. I'm also am running an manual transmission.

I had the ECM programmed but the truck is not running right and I don't think the guy did what I asked... So I plan to purchase a tunner and do the following. THE DST package appears to be reasonablly priced.

Here is what I want to do. Turn off EGR, Turn off rear 02 sensors, Turn off auto trans, turn off fuel tank pressure sensor if I can, I believe Vats is diasabled.

I'm running a painless engine harness and I have all the sensors connected, except for the above. I also do not have a VSS installed, not sure if I need this.

ECM is installed and all connections made where appropriate. The truck will idle but will not "rev" beynd about 2,000 RPM. I think I have an issue with the rear 02 sensors being enabled in the ECM because I'm getting values for rear 02 when I scan with a scan tool for operational data.

Truck is running very rich.... I need to fix this thing where I can drive it...its aggrevating me really #$*%&$...bad. Fuel pressure is good I've checked it with a manual gauage. I also would like to increase the idle speed up to about 700 or 800 RPM.

Can anyone comment on what you think and will DST be a good choice to manage these "software switches"? Also do I need a VSS (vehicle speed sensor), I think Downey makes a decent one that plugs into the manual speedo cable... I also have the evap canister installed along with the plumbing.

Idles rough, runs rich... not drivable at this time, not setting any codes, I would appreciate any insight or learning curves others have gone through.
I've not bought a tuner yet...but it looks like I will be shortly.

Appreciate any feedback, Thanks, Elbert

Hi Elbert,

Been thinking about putting a LS1 in my FJ62 Land Cruiser.

Can anyone comment on what you think and will DST be a good choice to manage these "software switches"? Also do I need a VSS (vehicle speed sensor), I think Downey makes a decent one that plugs into the manual speedo cable... I also have the evap canister installed along with the plumbing.

You have a Scan tool Yes? Which type?

JET DST will get all those things done I would say.

You will have to learn how to use the software to tune your engine, if you like a challenge it can be fun.

You will have more then just one mechanical tuning issue to sort out. Identify each issue research it and sort it out, then move onto the next issue. Before you know it your truck will run ok.

Do you know what PCM part number you are using? I would guess you are using the black box Vortec PCM.

You should run the VSS!

Are you using the Toyota 5 Speed?

Any Pics of the conversion?

Cheers

Mick

Idle rev limits can be due to abuse mode enable due to PCM thinking unit is being abused.

Mick's right on the VSS. Really need to have it installed. It informs the PCM about the status of the trans (since you have gone to manual you can change that in DST).

Hi,

Yes I'm using a scan tool I borrwed from a friend. Its an autoxray EZ-Scan 6000.

I have the stock PCM (I'll have to look for the PN) Its one of the black box types with built in heat sink ribs... I bought the engine, complete with all the accessories, wiring harnes, PCM...etc all of which was connected when I received. I"m runing a painless harness for the engine and have the stock harness in "storage".

I am running a manual 5 speed, Toyota Transmission that we installed along with the engine swap, along with Mark's adapter and advance adapters V-8 front engine mounts.

I'll post some pics later tonight when I get home.

Hi Elbert,

Attached txt file will give you an idea of what parameters can be adjusted in your PCM with the JET DST Software.

This would be very similar to what you have.

This will give you an idea of what to expect.

Cheers

Mick

Some scan tools will tell you when you are in a certain PCM operating mode.

The Tuner can disable codes in Diagnostic parameter switches so codes do not show up.

Abuse mode, is a pcm operating condition set by parameters to control excessive thrashing of your engine so to speak. It will limit engine output.

You will find parameters in the txt file I posted.
