new GM MDI unit

anyone else here playing with one of these, i just got mine last week. man does it program fast and the wireless is nice. it also works with pcmscan for some wireless generic obd2 codes/data on other vehicles. anyone know of other software that is j2534 compliant. it is amazing how cheap these units are from gm ($799) compared to the bosch version that is $2500-$4000

gm mdi:

bosch version:

I have one too. Amazing piece of equipment. The wireless works great.
Not sure what software works with the MDI but if you find any please post or PM me. I have to say I am inpressed also. The only trouble I have had with it are early Y body's (97-99) and some T1 S's. It's probably not an MDI issue but I get data corruption on the segment #'s

pcmscan works for generic obd2 codes/data(its not all that great but something to play around with), the wireless even works with the software,

gm software is supposed to be released this spring for the newer gm global cars coming out in 2009. that will be interesting as the tech2 will not work for diagnostic on these gm 2009 and newer vehicles

the bosh-vci version that looks to be exactly the same as the gm mdi has software for it, im sure it would run on the mdi, just a matter of getting the software??

it would be cool if mxscan and tunercat were able to work with this unit

Let me make sure, but Bosch/Vetronix has been making the tech 2 for years., hence the bosch offering.

They had some issues with Texas Instruments that was making the hardware and Vetronix didn't want to cooperate as they both bid on software and hardware. It got nasty a couple years ago.

Must say it looks pretty sharp for an option.

With can would be a great version 2 interface for TC users.

Through in a little LS2 + and were cooking....

this would be a great option for tc users, can enabled, serial data, low speed lan, and coming in 2009/10 mid speed lan/can this one interface does it all. just need some software to really make it fun. this is the new standard for scan tools/programmers for all model cars

the only problem i see, is how do you lock your software to a single user, like the tc2 software needs the tc2 interface to make it all work, how do you lock software to a single person on a unit that can be purchased by anyone. i hope this unit takes off, it seems to be the standard in hardware to come.

your right. The battle was between TI and HP for the hardware. It didn't work out well when one company got the bid for the software (vetronix) and the the other got the hardware (hp)
Which it's been so long I may have it all backwards by now.

That interface is big bucks.

The scanner I use does VPW, CAN and GMLAN. Interface is $494 and that is with the cables.

The interface can be used either USB

Wireless - peer to peer or via a IEEE802.G LAN router. This allow me to use a desktop PC on my LAN inside to connect to the car under test outside, great in winter weather.

Peer to peer uses a static IP address between the laptop and the interface.

Wreless is really needed for use of cars like a 2008 vette that uses full GMLAN's data path and needed to do bi-directional commands.

$800 bucks if your inside the gm system.
ETAS/BOsch wants $3500
I think that's cheap for an oem scan tool.
