New here...

I'm not real sure where to start with tuning...thats why I'm here I have a tune from Bryan @ PCMforless, and it's pretty decent for a mail order tune. But I know there's room for improvement cause it's quite obviously running rich. Anyways, I want to learn how to fine tune the car myself, so I plan to purchase Tunercat in the near future and start slowly playing with the tune. I know I need to purchase an interface cable and the Tunercat program itself...is that all I need?

Oh and a little info on the car...It's a 96 Z28, M6. I'm running an OBD1 computer in it though.

The motor is 350ci with forged rods and pistons, 11.8:1 compression, ported factory heads (271/191 @ .600) 236/236 .593/.593 107lca cam, ported stock intake, 58mm throttle body, 37lb/hr injectors, 1.75" lontubes and 3.5" single exhaust.

I hope to learn alot about tuning in the near future, so any advice would be greatly appreciated

unfortunatley TC2 isnt for sale anymore. The rights have been sold to Jet Industries and they sell it as JET Digital Signal Tuner (DST).

You can purchase Tunercat from Moates.net along with a Roadrunner Realtime Emulator. The Emulator bypasses PCM flashing and allows for actual Real time changes to a tune.

Another option is Wester's GMT, but this is directed moreso at the Pro PCM tuner due to its higher cost, it supports lotys of vehicles, some that ONLY GMT suports.

So for tuning products that I want to discuss here, are a used TC2 unit, Tunercat RTOBD2, Wester's GMT or JET DST.

here is the TunercatOBD2-Roadrunner product page.
TunerCat : Moates.Net

You are looking at $1104.
Roadrunner $599.00
Tunercat RTOBD2 with 1 Definition File(for non TC2 users)$225
Tunercat Cable and re-flash software for Roadrunner users $280

I'm sure other will chime in here.

BTW Welcome to the Monodax site.
peace
Hog

OOOOOps, sorry my friend.

Check out the Tunercat site.
TunerCat

On the left of the page, click on RT Tuner. theres 2 OBD1 chip emulator choices, 1's called the Romulator(by Xtronics) the other is the Craig Moates AutoProm emulator.

peace

Thats more what I was expecting After reading that though it looks like the OBD1 RT tuner is for cars that have EPROMs. Mine has to be flashed like an OBD2 computer. So looks like RT is a no-go for me Oh well, no biggie.

So if I'm understanding correctly, I need to buy a cable ($90) from this page: AKM Electronics - Interface Converters and the $EE ECM definition file from this page: TunerCat for $59.85 and thats it to start, right?

You are correct, no RTT for LT1's at all, none of them. Need to create a ROM emulator for those memories. I have one that I was thinking of trying, but need time to mess with it. The problem is the LT1 has 2 memories not 1, so that poses some new issues....

And there isn't much market for it.... The design costs would end up fairly high, so I can't see putting so much effort into it and everyone cry about the costs and not be willing to pay for it. So that is more or less why you don't see it.....

Good idea, just financially problematic.

I understand. LT1s are always the red-headed step child when it comes to developing stuff like that because of the low demand. It would be nice though.

So was I correct about the stuff that I need to purchase in order to get started tuning?

If you want to down grade one more time I believe you can RT tune the 93
LT1. Memcal adapter and rom emulator.

Good and bad, 92-93's are Speed Density only.... While not a BAD thing, but it is more important to have the VE tables tuned properly. MAF's are more forgiving for mods. Jury is still out which is faster....
