New to the Forum

Guys:

I am somewhat new to the electronics tuner world and have been "learning up" for the last year. I used to be a "shadetree" mechanic back in the 1970's and early 1980's, but got out of cars and tuning. I am now back in!

My truck is a Chevrolet 1997 Suburban (K1500 4WD with 5.7 Vortec Engine, Automatic Transmission).

I have future plans for my truck and am slowly working my way back into the finer details of tuning.

Background information: Industrial Computer Programing (Multiple Axis Controls), Servos and Steppers Controls, PLC's, etc. Have done this for over 10 years. Seemed like a natural progression to get back into the automotive electronic controls arena.

I hope that in the future I can contribute to these forums as I learn more from everyone and get more experience under my belt!

Looking forward to it. Thanks Guys!

'99 Chevy Burb 5.7 2WD

Hello Everyone!
Originaly from Europe, I now Live in Beaumont, TX. And you know, after years of driving little cars, the day I came to US, I fall in love with oversized SUV's

I never leave things working the way they used to - thinking that there's always room for improovement.

My friend and I will be experimenting with powerful hydrogen boosters (4-40LPM of hydroxy) on my burb to gretly improove fuel economy.
We have my burb and his H2 ('05 6.0L vortec). And so our purchase of JET DST brought me to this great site with lots of resources.

Cool Chevy S10 2.2 to 4.3 Vortec

I've wandered into some deep waters here.
My 1996 S10 ext. cab LS is in cherry shape except the 4 banger 5 sp. was tired, so I swapped to a 1998 4.3 Vortec & NV3500 5 sp. tranny. The engine with ECM was on a 4x4 auto. Second engine actually. The first had a blown head gasket and other issues discovered late in the change but the wrecker is making good on it.

Working on this since April, integrating the wiring being a major hurdle, Putting in a cold air intake and Flowmaster 50. Installed electric rad. fan. Luckily I can walk to P/T work. Like to finish this before the rain starts, we get about 6ft. a year. I hate rain.

Now I'm thinking there may be problems with performance because of the auto to standard??

Me...59yrs. ex-mechanic many years ago but still get in trouble(obviously), also retired from working at hydro dams as an electronics control, protection and instrument craftsman. Lived in Australia 12 yrs. with permanent residency, lived/worked in Papua New Guinea 3 yrs. and worked in Katrina disaster more recently traveling there 6 times for several months.

My hope with this forum is I can glean some guidance and contribute some of my limited knowledge.

Yes, Welcome!

Regarding the automatic PCM with the manual tranny. You might be able to fake out the current PCM to think that the truck is in "drive" all the time, but if you have the proper tuning software, there is usually a single box that can be checked to select "manual" tranny. You may (or may not) have to turn off some DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) associated with the automatic. As I haven't done a similar swap on anything with OBD-II, I'm not sure. It may happen automatically by checking "manual".

Having said all of that...
My only experience with an auto to manual swap was an OBD-1 setup in a Fiero. I (of course) used Tunercat. It worked perfectly.
Although I have the OBD-II version of Tunercat (for my '01 Sonoma) it is no longer available to new customers.
I can't comment on the folks who bought the license from TC, because I've never had any dealings with them.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Raydar.
I believe I can perhaps jumper the wires indicating it is in drive but that may raise another conflict. I'll start with all open and see what happens.

New to Jet DST/Tunercat

New to tuning with Tunercat/DST. Pulling Whipple piggy back system for the lack of support. What areas of enrichment should i be looking at for added fuel with boost applied. 7 PSI max
1997 7.4 C3500 Whipple charger
I am familiar with tuning bat not the best by far. I also have worked with Moates EBL flash unit on my other blower truck. Support from all any would be very much appreciated.
Any opinions on boost a pump in conjunction with tuning?

Welcome!

Many of us have tuned the 96-97 7.4's, but the problem is a good datalogger.

98-00 7.4L's had a new PCM that there is plenty of good dataloggers for, the ideal swap is going with a 0411 PCM and then you have great support even from 2 and 3 bar MAP Operating Systems (from HPTuners and EFILive). I suspect that they can be tuned with TunerCat but a special definition file would be needed. Anyone know anything about it?

Hook up with the 7.4L thread I started on fullsizechevy.com in the techincial forum, it is long and there is a guy with a Whipple'd 454 vortec. He likes smoking the heavily modded diesel pickups.... They are just in awe that a gasser eats them up....
